Korea’s U-18 baseball team wins bronze after beating the U.S


The South Korean Under-18 National Baseball Team won its first bronze medal in four years at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup.

The team, led by Lee Young-bok (Chungam-Go), defeated the United States 4-0 in the bronze medal game on Tuesday in Taipei, Taiwan.

After scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI triple by Yeo Dong-gun (Seoul High) and a bunt single by Park Ji-hwan (Se AD), 한국야동 Korea added a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Lee Sang-joon (Gyeonggi High). In the top of the sixth, Lee Seung-min (Hwimungo) hit an RBI triple to seal the win.

Starting pitcher Kim Taek-yeon (Incheon High School) earned the complete game victory, allowing just two hits and one walk while shutting down the USA offense over seven innings. She struck out nine.

In six games at the tournament, Kim has pitched 16 innings, striking out 29 and walking just four. She also picked up two wins and a 0.88 ERA.

Kim, who pitched against Taiwan on Feb. 2, 성인웹툰 Australia on Feb. 4, Puerto Rico on Feb. 7, the United States on Feb. 8, and the Netherlands on Feb. 9, was the lone pitcher on the mound, throwing 98 pitches.

“I felt like I was in good shape and wanted to throw aggressively,” Kim told WBSC after the match, “I couldn’t have done it without the help of the defense. I was able to throw more aggressively because I trusted my teammates.”

This is the first bronze medal for South Korea in four years after finishing fourth last year.

South Korea has won the event five times 19가이드03 (1981-1994-2000-2006-2008).
