South Korea finishes 8th overall with 13 gold medals, most in history

South Korean athletes won 13 gold medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, finishing eighth in the overall medal standings.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which wrapped up today (Aug. 11), South Korean athletes won 13 gold, nine silver, and 10 bronze medals. The 13 gold medals tied Korea’s most ever at an Olympic Games, following Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

In Beijing 2008, South Korea finished seventh with 11 silver and eight bronze medals, and in London 2012, South Korea finished fifth with nine silver and nine bronze medals.

The overall medal total of 32 is second only to the 33 medals won in Seoul in 1988 (12 gold, 10 silver, 11 bronze). Beijing 2008 also had a medal total of 32.

The Korean Sports Federation had set a gold medal target of five for the Games, and with 144 athletes competing – the smallest number in 48 years since Montreal 1976 – South Korea more than doubled its goal, winning 13 gold medals.

It’s been eight years since South Korea finished in the top 10 of the medal standings at a Summer Olympics since Rio de Janeiro 2016, when it finished eighth (9 gold, 3 silver, 9 bronze). In Tokyo 2021, they finished 16th (6 gold, 4 silver, 10 bronze).

South Korea added one silver and one bronze medal on the final day of the competition. Park Hye-jung (Goyang City Hall), competing in the women’s 81 kg and above weightlifting event at the South Paris Arena in Paris, France, finished second with a lift of 131 kg in the 메이저사이트 snatch, 168 kg in the jerk, and 299 kg in total.

Park, who set new South Korean records for lift and total, became the first weightlifting Olympic medalist in eight years after Yun Jin-hee Yoon won bronze in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. It was also the first Olympic medal in the women’s heavyweight category since Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Jang Jang-ran won bronze in London in 2012. The gold medal in this category went to Li Wen-yuan (China) with a total of 309 kilograms.

In the modern pentathlon, Seong Seung-min (KOR) won bronze in the women’s event, scoring 1,441 points in the women’s final at the Palace of Versailles on the final day of competition, finishing third behind Michele Guyasi (HUN) with 1,461 points and Elodie Clouvelle (FRA) with 1,452 points. South Korea has two Olympic medalists in modern pentathlon, with Jeon Woong-tae (Gwangju Metropolitan Government) winning bronze in the men’s event at Tokyo 2021.

Seong became the first Asian athlete to finish on the podium in the women’s modern pentathlon at the Olympic Games. Her teammate Kim Sun-woo (Gyeonggi-do) finished eighth with 1,410 points.

The main body of the Korean athletes will depart Paris tomorrow (Dec. 12) and return home the following day (Dec. 13) via Incheon International Airport.
