Taekwondo hopeful Park Chan-hee (Korea Gymnastics University) has won gold at the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Challenge 2023.
Park defeated his local opponent (Dong-A University) by a round score of 2-0 in the men’s 80 kg overweight final at the Grand Prix Challenge on Sunday at the Muju Taekwondo Center in Muju, Jeollabuk-do.
Park’s victory earned him a spot in the 2023 Grand Prix Series in Taiyuan, which will be held on October 10-12 at the G6 level.
The Grand Prix Series berths are awarded to the first and second place finishers in each weight class, but due to the rule that if two athletes of the same nationality finish first and second, the next highest ranked athlete of a different nationality is awarded a ticket.
Park won the first round with a dominant victory after a 0-0 tie in the first round against a local player.
With momentum on her side, Park pushed the local even harder in the second game, winning 12-2.
Meanwhile, Lee Dong-joo (Yongin City Hall), competing in the same weight class as Park Chan-hee, defeated Mohammad Emami of Team Refugee in the third-place match to win the bronze medal.
In the women’s 67 kg overweight category, Kwon Mi-seo (Dong-A University) lost to Pan Yun-chi (Chinese Taipei) in the final by a score of 0-2 (3-12 5-7).
With the silver medal, 한국야동 Kwon qualified for the Grand Prix Series.
